Spring 2010 Project
Beauty in Simplicity
Beauty in Simplicity was inspired and influenced by the Shaker culture and lifestyle. The beauty of nature is the focus of this design, made to fit the lid of a hand-crafted Shaker box. Matching needlework smalls (scissor fob, pinkeep, and needlebook) complement the box, giving you a complete sewing set.
Each piece is stitched on 32-count Country French Linen (Latte) with Weeks Dye Works cotton floss. Colors include: Bluecoat Blue, Bluecoat Red, Bright Leaf, Chestnut, Curry, Garnet, Ivy, Seaweed, and Snowflake.
Stitches include: Cross Stitch over two threads, Back Stitch, Basketweave Tent Stitch
Class will cover the stitching of the box lid and needlework smalls, working the Basketweave Tent Stitch (grass), finishing techniques for each of the needlework smalls, mounting your piece on the shaker box lid, personalizing your smalls, and making twisted cord. Plan to complete your scissor fob in class!
Students should have previous experience working on linen or linen-like fabrics and should be comfortable working from basic stitching diagrams and cross stitch charts. Students will need their favorite stitching tools or basic sewing kit (sharp sewing scissors, ruler or tape measurer, writing utensil, extra needles, a hoop or Q-Snaps, etc.). If required, student will need to provide their own additional lighting or magnification (remember, if bringing "plug-ins", please bring an extension cord).
